Step-by-Step Guide On How to Set Goals and Actually Achieve Them

Introduction

You will agree with me that setting goals is one thing however, achieving them is entirely a different thing. A lot of use had a set goal in the year 2025 however, the year came and past without them achieving half or their set goals. This year is 2026 and i know you have set other goals that you would like to achieve however, if you don't set your goals right, you might end up not achieving all of them as you intended.

Your set goals repeatedly fail because there are no clarity and consistency. To achieve your set goals, the goals must be clear enough and you must consistently work towards achieving them on a daily basis.

Assuming you've set the goal of buying a car this year, you need to be sure of your yearly income, your yearly possible expenses and your yearly savings after expenses. Once you have this kind of set goal for the year, you will then know how to control your expenses without having to starve yourself.

If you follow a laid down principle, you will go a long way in actualizing all your set goals for the year. Some of the laid down principle will be exposed in this article.

This article will literally guide you on the things you must do to achieve all your set goals for the year and other years to come by God's grace. This article is made not just for the beginners' but for all ages including pros and newbies.

Steps to Achieving Your Set Goals

To set goals and actually achieve them, there are some steps you must follow. Some of the steps are thus;

1) Understand What Makes a Good Goal

It's not all about setting goals that is as good as failed even from the unset. You need to understand what a good goal is as well as what a bad goal is. Assuming that you earn $20 monthly, if you set the goal of buying a private jet with that kind of income, you will agree with me that goal is as good as failed except if you have the plans of dirtying your hands.

A good goal is one that is;

A) Clear Goals: A good goal must very clear and not vague. Once your goal ambiguous and not clear enough, achieving them becoming almost impossible. You cannot set a goal of building a duplex within 6 months when you earn only $20 monthly and you don't have other sources of income. This kind of goal is vague hence achieving it will be almost impossible except if you want to dirty your hands.

B) Measurable Goals: To increase the chances of achieving your goal, your set goal must be measurable. For instance, instance of saying that you want to swim to the ocean, you would rather say that you want to swim like 2 meters into the ocean and then return to the shore. If you start the adventure of swimming through large ocean the question will be "when do you intend to end that kind of adventure?". If your set goal is to swim through an ocean, you will agree with me that your set goal is not measurable and as such, achieving it is almost impossible

C) Realistic Goals: Your set goal must be realistic. For instance, if you the goal that you want to add 1 foot to your height in a week, then you will agree with me that this kind of goal is not realistic at all. If you set this kind of goal, we will assume that you just want to talk and there is no atom of seriousness in it.

D) Time-bound Goals: Your set goal must be time-bound. If your goal is not bound by time, it automatically removes the focus of acting towards achieving them. For instance, instead of saying that your set goal is to exercise all the time, you would rather set the goal of exercising for 30 minutes daily. 30 minutes daily is more of a realistic and a time-bound goal than just setting the goal of exercising all the time. If your set goal is to exercise all the time, does that mean will not be doing any other thing?

2) Write Down Your Goals

It is not enough to verbally set your goals; you need to also write them down. Writing down your set goals makes you not to forget or replace your set goals with other goals. To achieve your set goals, it is very important to write them down.

Writing down your goals does not require you to buy expensive gargets before you start. You can write your goals in a notebook, you can write down your goals in your phone/laptop notepad or you can use any goal tracking app of your choice.

Some of the importance of writing down your set goals are;

A) Makes them visible and real: If you write them your set goals, it does not only make them visible but it also makes them look real. Goals written down makes you visualize them from time to time. Looking at the set goals will constantly act as a reminder and it will help you to act towards achieving them.

B) Commitment: Goals written down helps you to commit towards achieving them. It will help to always remind you that your set goals are there as part of your to-do list and until you achieve them, they should remain where you wrote them down.

3) Divide Your Goals Into Milestone

While it is good to set goals, it is not advisable to bundle them up. If the set goal is overwhelming, it becomes even more difficult to achieve. Instead bundling them up, it is better practice to divide into smaller milestones. For example, if your set goal is to buy a car of 3 million in 6 months and you earn like 800 thousand monthly, instead of waiting for 3 million that will come to your account at once, you can decide the save 500 thousand monthly from your salary, then find a way to live on the remaining 300 thousand for that month. Setting that kind of monthly milestone can help you achieve your set goal in no time.

Another example is setting the goal of becoming a blogger. Instead of killing yourself with posting 10 articles in a daily which can be draining, you can post in milestone of like 1 article daily. This will help you feel refreshed anytime you want to post a new article and will also help you post only quality contents.

4) Turn You Set Goals Into Daily Habits

For a goal that you will achieve in the next 6 months, achieving them becomes easier if you have daily habits towards achieving them. To achieve your set goals using daily habits, you can use 2 different methods thus;

A) Use Daily Checklist: Now that you have your set goals written down, you need to also check a checklist you will complete on a daily. This checklist will guide your daily actions towards achieving your set goals. If you have a daily checklist towards achieving your set goals, always ensure to follow them diligently.

B) Use Weekly Schedule: Aside having a daily checklist to always follow, it is also advisable to have a weekly schedule. This weekly schedule can be in form of weekly teams' reminder. This schedule automatically reminds you what you need to do towards achieving your set goals. This weekly schedule can be like a recap that helps you track your daily checklists and ensure that you completed all your set checklists.

For your set daily checklist and weekly schedule, always ensure that you follow and complete them diligently.

5) Stay Motivated and Focused

Like a new year resolution, you can set all your goals for the year however, if you don't remain motivated and focused, all your set goals will diffuse over time. You need to always remind yourself why you started in the first place and remain consistent towards achieving your set goal.

Aside staying motivated and focused, you will need to regularly review your progress. For all the weekly or monthly targets that you've completed, you need to always celebrate your wins and remain motivated to do more towards achieving all your set goals.

Common Goal-Setting Mistakes

While you are planning to set your short-term or long-term goals, there are some goal-setting mistakes that you must avoid. They are thus;

1) Setting too many goals at once

To avoid setting a goal that will eventually fail, avoid setting too many goals all at same time. Since some of these set goals require funds to complete, it is advisable to complete one set goal before starting another one.

2) Expecting Instant Results

To avoid making you feel disappointed in the middle of achieving your set goals, there is need for you to remove the expectation of instant result from your mind. While you are working towards achieving your set goals, you need to give yourself time and you need to be consistent too.

3) Giving up easily after little setbacks

If you have set goals, there is possibility that the set goal will not work as you planned it. If you find yourself having setbacks in achieving your set goals, don't ever give up, keep pushing till you actualize your set goals. It is over only when you give up else, you can achieve all your set goals with your consistency.
