Introduction

Owning a phone is one thing however, having the phone to run at optimal speed is another thing. Low space in your phone can reduce the performance of the phone and hence reduce your productivity. As the owner of that phone that also need the optimal performance the phone, there is need to always check the remaining space in the phone and free some space if need be.

Aside optimal speed and performance of your phone, low space in your phone can lead to app crashes. Any app you want to run the system might unexpectedly kill the app run, hence truncating what you were doing in the app before the crash.

Checking your phone, you might see things you might need to delete because you don't pressingly need them now however, you don't want to completely lose them.

In this article, i will discussing some perfect ways you can free up some space in your phone without having to completely delete those important files.

Steps On How to Discover And Free Up Space In Your Phone

Below are the steps you can use to discover and free up some space in your phone

1) Check what is taking the space

That your phone space is going low does not mean that you can delete anything you see in your phone. You will need to carefully confirm what is taking up the space. That will determine the next step you will take in freeing up the space. You can use app manager or/and file explorers to know what is actually taking up the space.

The app manager or/and file explorers will show you the files that have the highest size as well the files that have the lowest size. You can decide to delete the files that are no more needed or chose a different way to back them up.

2) Clear Cached Data

Cached data are temporary data. It's function is to retrieve the sites or pages you have previously visited without having to load the page afresh. Deleting your cached data does not have any negative effect on your phone. If the data that is cached is big, try and delete them from your phone.

3) Use Cloud Storage

This is one of the best ways to back up your files outside your phone. If you have a google account, instead of saving that large file on your phone, it's best your store it on your google account and then remove it from your phone. You can always access them from you go0gle drive anytime the need arises. If your google drive is full or almost full, you can leverage using Dropbox and an alternative. These cloud storages are absolutely free to use.

4) Use External Hard Disks

This is similar to cloud storage however; this storage does not use internet. To avoid using your mobile data to upload your files to your google drive or Dropbox, you can use external hard disks instead and store your files. You can restore to your phone anytime the need arises.

5) Optimize Your Photos and Videos

Instead of deleting some of videos and photos, you can opt to file optimization. File optimization reduces the size of the file reasonably without deleting the file itself. You can enable automatic optimization so you don't have to manually optimize your videos and photos.

6) Delete file duplicates

File duplicates can reasonably impact on the total available space left on your phone. One file duplicate might look small however, once there are several duplicate files, it will negatively impact on the total available space in your phone. You can use file managers or file explorers to discover duplicate files and delete them.

7) Uninstall unused apps

This is the part that even me fail to do. That is probably because i still have some free space left on my phone. In a situation where your phone space is seriously running low, there will be need for you to uninstall all unused apps. If in 2 months there is a particular in your phone that you did not open at all, then that app is possibly not needed in your phone at that time. Its better you uninstall the app, and the re-install it when you actually need it.

8) Clean Up Your Downloads Folder

For any applications, pdfs, videos or photos that you download to your phone, you need to delete them as soon you are done using them. You need to always check your downloads folder regularly. I am actually guilty of this part. I can download and application on my phone however, after installation, i will not remove to remove the application from my phone. I only remove them when i am in the cleanup mood. This is actually because i have enough space on my phone to spare. This should not be applicable to you if your phone space is seriously running low.

9) Use Your Phone Built-In Storage Cleaner

Phones now have built-in storage cleaner that come with the phone by default. Your phone built-in storage cleaner can do a deep scan of your phone space, show you a 360-degree view of everything in your phone that is consuming space on your phone and then help you delete them. For me, i use vivo phone and my phone built-in storage cleaner is iManager.

This application came with the phone by default and from the application, i can do a 360 degree on my phone and then delete the files i don't need anymore. The application can also do an anti-virus scan on my phone. All i need to do on my part is to update the anti-virus definition and then set the antivirus scan to automatic. You can browse through your phone apps, confirm if you have similar app and then use it often.

How to Intelligently Manage Your Phone Storage

Instead of deleting and backing up the files that is already in your phone, why not avoid the downloading them. To intelligently manage your phone storage, follow the below steps;

1) Turn of media auto download in your WhatsApp

Media auto download in your WhatsApp app makes you to download the media you don't actually need. Imagine that you are in a group that constantly shares large videos and photos, aside the fact that it takes some of your mobile data without you knowing, it also stores media in your phone without you knowing.

If your phone is one that does not have much disk space, it advisable you turn of the auto download in your WhatsApp so that you can manually download any media you actually want to download and when you actually to download them in your phone. That will help you know the new media that has entered your phone and then help decide on the next step to take after watching (delete or keep them).

2) Restart Your Phone Regularly

There are some system caches that in-built or downloaded apps will not be app to find and remove them from your phone. The only way to delete this kind of cache will be to restart your phone. Restarting your phone helps the phone to work optimally.

As the owner of a phone, even if your phone work optimally, there will be need to restart the phone once in a while. You need to schedule a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly restart of your phone. This will help your phone to run optimally at all time.

3) Go For Media Streaming

Instead downloading that video or mp3 to your phone, why not stream the media instead. For paid video streaming, you can use Netflix or amazon prime videos and for free video streaming, you can use YouTube. If you stream your favorite videos instead of downloading them, it reduces the possibility of accumulated any unnecessary space in your phone.

Freeing your phone space does not mean that you must lose those files. All you need to do is the choose the best mentioned in this blog post that suites you.
