Bluehost: How to get started with cheap web hosting

If you want to start a blog, your first step is to figure out where you’re going to host it. Your choice of hosting company will have the biggest effect on how much traffic your site gets and how easy it is to use. For this guide on cheap web hosting from Bluehost, we’ll talk about what to look for in an affordable hosting service as well as how to navigate the monthly costs and signup process with ease so you can get your new site live as soon as possible!

What is web hosting?

Web hosting allows site owners to post a website or web page onto the Internet. The user's computer connects with one of these servers in order to display your website content on their screen. The server sends information about your site to the user's computer and vice versa.
The more visitors you have coming to your site, the more often this process happens which will put stress on the server and can lead to delays in loading times. With a shared hosting plan, other websites could also be located on the same server as yours, sharing bandwidth. For example if there are 100 websites residing on the same server and one visitor comes to each of those sites at once (impossible), then each site would receive 1 visitor's worth of bandwidth (1%). However if only 1 person visits any of those sites at once then each site would receive 100% worth of bandwidth. It’s important to remember that when it comes to shared hosting plans, performance levels can vary based on how many sites reside on the same server. If you're looking for reliable hosting without high monthly costs, consider investing in a managed WordPress hosting plan. If budget is not an issue but scalability is high priority, then a dedicated hosting solution may work best for you. Dedicated hosting means that your website does not share resources with any other company on the same server. You'll know exactly what resources you're working with, making it easier to scale up or down depending on how much traffic you get. On the downside, purchasing a dedicated hosting package means committing to higher monthly fees. So, which option is right for you? That depends on your needs and requirements. A managed WordPress hosting plan might be ideal if reliability is important to you while a dedicated hosting package might be perfect if scalability is your top priority.

What are my next steps after I create my account?

1. Once you create your account on Bluehost, you will need to select a hosting plan.
2. The next step is to choose your domain name. You can either use a domain that you already own, or you can purchase a new one through Bluehost.
3. After your domain is set up, you will need to set up your site. You can either use WordPress (which is included in most plans) or you can create a custom site using HTML and CSS. With these tools, you can create anything you want! All of the tools are easy to understand and work with. I recommend the Advanced tab for beginners who want to learn more about coding their own sites, but there's no need for this if you're not interested.  Once you have finished setting up your site and adding pages, plugins, themes etc., it's time to save your progress so that all of your changes are saved. Click on Create Database at the top left corner of the screen and fill out all fields with appropriate information. When you finish, click on Create database. Next, log into cPanel and select phpMyAdmin from the navigation bar. Then, click New SQL Database under SQL Databases and input a name for your database. When prompted to create tables for that database, say yes. Finally click go to browser window where you can access phpMyAdmin again - now as an administrator. Fill in details like Host Name, Username, Password and Table Prefix. It's very important to know what you want to do before filling out these fields; don't just type something randomly because it might affect your website negatively later on. For example, if you put 123 as your table prefix without understanding what that means then every table created will start with 123.
On the right side of phpMyAdmin should be a list of Tables that currently exist within the database. Find wp_posts and double-click on it. Now you can edit everything about the posts: columns, data types, constraints, indexes etc. As long as you follow the same naming conventions for each column as WordPress does when creating posts, everything should look exactly how it did in WordPress itself. If you followed my previous instructions to Create Database and named your database database, this would be located in wp_posts table within that database. So you would search for wp_posts and edit its columns. Remember, the names of each column must match those listed in WordPress. Once you've edited your post creation settings, click Go back to MySQL Workbench at the top left corner of the screen to return to where you were editing your site setup. Your domain will also need to be pointed towards Bluehost, which can easily be done by following their simple steps. Lastly, add some content to your site by logging into WordPress and uploading images/text/video/etc. Your site is live once you hit Publish!
